Animal guides, also called spirit guides or power animals come in and out of our lives depending on the direction we are headed. First Nations people have an affinity and understanding of the sacred connection we have to the earth and its creatures. They believe that totem animals are ones that are with you for life, both in the physical and spiritual worlds. It is possible to identify with different animal guides throughout your lifetime, but there is usually one totem animal that acts as the main guardian spirit.
For some people, knowing their totem animal is something they have intuitively understood. For others, seeking a connection to a spirit animal or totem is discovered through inner reflection and inner journeying. Accessing insight through dreams or messages can be part of the spiritual process. Using Oracle Cards or guided meditations are ways to develop this connection and to gain insight into the messages your personal guides or totems have to share.
One thing to remember is that you cannot choose your totem spirit; it chooses you or has already chosen you. By paying attention to your past and present, it becomes a process of developing inner knowing and spiritual understanding. Once you have identified your spirit and totem animals, honor their messages by keeping small statues, dreamcatchers or jewelry around you to remind you of the meaning of these sacred relationships.
