Diet & Nutrition Keywords: Ayurveda, Macrobiotics, Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Deepak Chopra, Natural Remedies Healing the body is as much a process as healing the mind and spirit. Sometimes people find it easier to focus on the spiritual/emotional aspects of their healing journey, while finding it a much bigger challenge to improve diet and nutrition for their overall physical health. Inevitably, however, all healing systems will eventually point their way to the body for complete effectiveness. It’s true that even the healthiest diet cannot improve the anger or sadness in one’s heart, but it’s also true that all the prayers in the world cannot fix a vitamin deficiency as well as say… an orange! For your travels into the world of improved nutrition, and for some great ideas and inspiration on this subject, Ascendant Books carries a well-rounded selection of books for you. Books that range from eating right for your blood type, to vegetarian cookbooks and natural herbal remedies are available in our Healing – Diet & Nutrition section of our store. Ayurveda Ayurveda comes from 2 Sanskrit words: ‘Ayer’ meaning life, and ‘Veda’, meaning knowledge. Knowledge of Life is the basis of Ayurveda, one of the oldest known natural healing systems from India. Within it are practices and diet information for specific body types known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha types. Dr. Deepak Chopra popularized the Ayurvedic system in the west. Deepak Chopra Born in New Delhi, he is an acclaimed medical doctor, trained as an endocrinologist, and has brought alternative health to the attention of mainstream audiences. He has many books, such as ‘Perfect Health’ and ‘Quantum Healing’, which combine medical practices and wisdom from both the eastern and western worlds. Macrobiotics The modern practice of macrobiotics began in the 1920s by a Japanese educator named George Ohsawa. Ohsawa is said to have cured himself of a serious illness by changing to a simple diet of brown rice, miso soup, and sea vegetables. At the core of Ohsawa’s writings on macrobiotics is the concept of yin and yang. Yin is passive and yang is aggressive. In the macrobiotic view, the forces of yin and yang must be kept in balance to achieve good health. Andrew Weil Andrew Weil is one of North America’s best known doctors. He makes us aware of the body’s capacity to heal itself by providing us with information on what and how we should eat. Dr. Weil makes it clear how an optimal diet can supply the basic needs of the body, thereby allowing the body to employ its own healing mechanisms.
