The History of Ascendant Books

Ascendant Books was established in 1983 by the current owner, Alice Powell, and her former business partner (who amicably left the business three years later to pursue other dreams).

The inspiration for the stores name comes from the word ascension, which means to “rise up”. This symbolizes the purpose of the store which is to offer books and other items that can help people grow and learn. At the time of its establishment there were no other metaphysical bookstores in Edmonton as the metaphysical community in Alberta was still fairly small. The first location was shockingly tiny- about the same size as an apartment sized kitchen, and with no more than fifty books in stock! Regardless of its size however word spread quickly about this new and exciting bookstore that carried titles never before seen in mainstream bookstores. The initial focus of the store was on astrology, dreams, psychics and the works of mediums such as Edgar Cayce, but it quickly advanced into the diverse maze of metaphysical interests. Ascendant Books was moved into a bigger location on 109 Ave and 124 Street just two years after being opened.

The popularity of the store and high demand for metaphysical items prompted a third move ten years later into its current location on 103rd Ave and 124 Street. In over two decades of growth, exciting changes, and constant additions, Ascendant Books continues to grow alongside our valued customers

Ascendant Books Today

Today, Ascendant Books (located on 103rd Ave & 124 Street), is in a 5000 square foot space that is full from floor to ceiling with books and other items that contribute to the health and well being of the thousands of customers who visit the store.

When you walk into Ascendant Books, you are immediately drawn in by the aromatic fragrance of incense and the beautiful sounds of soothing music playing in the background.

Every available space of the store is full with treasures of every kind, including stunning crystals, dazzling jewelry, and a myriad of statues, native art, fountains, candles, music, and books.
